If you set up a tower rental business, who will be your biggest customer?
This is the first question you should ask yourself before setting up a small tower. Because unless you know who you’re going to rent to – you might lose money!
Without a doubt, your biggest customer will be wireless internet service providers (WISPs).
Seriously. These are the guys you’re going to end up dealing with the most.
Even in the most rural of areas, wireless internet is a necessity – and a lot of companies provide it as a service. They’re called wireless internet service providers.
Basically, all that WISPs do is provide wifi to customers. And they need your tower to accomplish the task.
Wifi providers are complicated people with complicated needs.
Getting a wireless WISP company set up on your tower isn’t easy. Because unless your tower comes pre-equipped with fiber optic cables, then wires have to be ran to it – which is a very complicated process.
Thankfully, you won’t have to set it up yourself. Often, the WISP companies take the burden of setting up the wifi signal themselves – and you still get paid.
Sadly, you don’t always get paid with money.
A common technique wifi service providers use to save money is to offer free internet in exchange for tower space. They’ll set up internet on your tower, and you get to use it for free.
While at first such a trade-off might not seem like much, it does start looking more desirable when you realize that most internet services range from $50 to $150 a month.
It’s not much, but it’s definitely better than nothing if you’re struggling to find space renters.
While renting out tower space to WISPs might not be for everyone, it’s definitely a quick option for tower owners looking to pad their bottom line. Even if you just get free internet out of the deal, it might be worth it.
